COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Village Center Development Commission (VCDC), 16 years
The VCDC started our popular farmers market and Holiday on the Plaza
Thanks to the development of Deerfield Centre and Deerfield Square, our downtown is wonderful. I take pride in my involvement as a member of the VCDC in the process of making this happen. Deerfield now has shopping areas that are first class. The Coromandel and South Commons housing areas and the apartments above Deerfield Centre are major assets to the community.The VCDC initiated the facade program to help older locally-owned businesses upgrade their premises by offering matching funds up to $50,000 for facade improvement. The Morelli Building, Deerfield Bakery, and others have used this money. The final piece of this program has been the renewal of ShoppersÕ Court and the Amish furniture facades and rear parking lot. Other community activities:
Mercury-Free Illinois committee (chair, Rep. Karen May): goal was to reduce mercury that was dumped into landfills
South Lake Mosquito Abatement District Board Member
League of Women Voters: deputy registrar; environmental affairs study group; chaired caucus study committee
Rotary Club president, 2007-08; member of a Rotary District work group that spent 10 days in Guatemala working at a school for Mayan children. (I'm going again this year.) Besides sanding, painting, building beds, screening dorms, etc., our group took water purification equipment to all the families in a village.
